Farewell to Brad: Brad Rosenwinkel (VU '02) has spent nearly 10 years working in the Admission Office, from his undergrad years as a student aide to his current position as Associate Director of Admission. Brad finishes his MBA through VU in May, and is ready to make a career or location change. I will greatly miss Brad. He was my right-hand man as a student and has been a terrific support of the VAN. His last day working with us is April 2; consider dropping him an email at: brad.rosenwinkel@valpo.edu
Numbers: Housing deposits for first-year and transfer students continue to be about 10% “down” compared to last year's numbers at this time. But we are hearing through your contacts and through admission counselors' conversations that families are still awaiting financial aid awards from other colleges. If you have questions about Valpo's costs or financial aid from the admitted students you talk with, I've shared some “talking points” in the Training section of this newsletter. But don't take on the detailed financial aid topic – refer the student to his or her admission counselor.
Student Aide interns in D.C.: Valparaiso University senior Jeff Field (Sugarloaf,
CA) took time to visit Valparaiso University junior Liane Joshua (Portsmouth, RI) and other Valpo friends during Spring Break. Jeff and Liane have been very active leaders as student aides in the Admission Office. Liane shares with us information on her Spring Semester internship in Washington, DC:
“I am interning with the Department of State, with the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, in the Office of Management Policy and Resources. The office handles three completely different issues within the UN system and the other international organizations; recruiting US citizens for positions within int'l orgs, working with int'l orgs to create and maintain good human resource policies (ie, salary and insurance for their workers), and lastly, budget requests from the orgs to the US; specificially dealing with the US assessed and voluntary contributions. Currently I am most heavily involved with the budget aspect of the office, definitely the most exciting and controversial (check out the Washington Post article from Mar 21, 'Expenses at UN Balloon'), as well as issues within the UN reform policy.
“For the summer, I'm trying really hard to stay here. I have applied for a few internships that do similar work to what I'm doing now, but if none of them work out, I can definitely stay within my current office or somewhere else within the Department.”
