Training: Christ College – The Honors College of Valparaiso University
A community of faculty and students that integrates fields of study, inspires love of learning, and enriches Christian moral and intellectual life through independent thought and collaborative inquiry.
- At 40 years old, is one of the oldest honors colleges in the country and nationally recognized in several major publications
- 4-year program emphasizing the liberal arts and humanities—history, literature, art, philosophy, and religion leading to honors designations at commencement and on transcript
- Christ College has its own dean and faculty (unlike honors programs), and its own building, Mueller Hall
- 85 first year students
- Approximately 300 students enrolled in Christ College, freshman through senior year
- Average class size: 14 (no classes over 20)
- 10 full-time faculty including the dean, plus 6 post-doctoral teaching fellows
- CC students are concurrently enrolled in one of VU's other colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Nursing
- Coursework emphasizes critical thinking, collaborative learning, independent study
- CC courses fulfill many general education requirements that all students must meet
- Many CC course are cross-listed with other departments and can fulfill major and minor requirements
- CC students complete their degrees with CC honors in 4 years without credit overloads
- Admission process:
- begins with application/acceptance to Valparaiso University
- students are selected from that pool for invitation to apply to CC
- accepted applicants notified by rolling basis, generally within 3 weeks of receipt of application
- Almost all students in or near the top 10% of high school graduating class
- Many Christ College graduates go on to distinguished professional or graduate schools; others immediately launch careers in business, industry, science, the arts, engineering, health care, education, church work, and other fields; still others serve in domestic or international volunteer programs.
