When asked what he planned to wear to the CIO 100 Awards in California, VU's Chief Information Officer Dennis Trinkle laughed and tipped up a diet shake. "I'm working on getting into my tux!" he said prior to the event on August 28. As he reported on his return, there was a red carpet entrance for those like Trinkle who represented organizations named one of the CIO 100 for 2006-2007. The recognition is a high note for Valpo as only seven universities were named within the 100. Editor-in-chief of CIO magazine Abbie Lundberg describes the recipients as "industry role models for business and IT excellence" who were chosen on the basis of creative and cutting-edge uses of technology described in their applications. Valpo was cited for its innovation, business value, leadership, and collaboration with end users.
Valparaiso University is pleased to announce that it has recently signed a contract to provide on-campus cable television services . As part of the new service, all residence hall rooms have been upgraded to receive a customized channel line-up with more than 75 channels of entertainment, sports, news, local broadcast and educational content. The new service will be broadcast throughout campus and will be provided free to campus residents as a convenience of occupancy. All that is necessary to receive the service is a cable ready television set and a coaxial cable to connect the television to the cable outlet in the wall.
Valparaiso University again receives praise from national publications :
- The University's academic quality was ranked among the top three master's level universities in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report, a distinction it has achieved in 16 of the past 17 years.
- Among specialty programs, Valpo's College of Engineering continues to be recognized as one of the nation's best engineering programs in U.S. News & World Report . Based on a survey of engineering deans and faculty members from throughout the country, the College of Engineering tied for 20th in the nation among schools where the highest degree awarded is a bachelor's or master's degree.
- VU is among the institutions of higher education featured in the new edition of “The Best 366 Colleges,” published by the Princeton Review . Approximately 15% of four-year colleges and universities in the United States are listed in the guide in which Valparaiso was recognized for the high quality of its academics, campus life, financial aid for students, and professors who build strong relationships to support their students' growth.
- Valparaiso, which opened its state-of-the-art Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources in 2004, also was ranked No. 18 on the Princeton Review's “Best College Library” list. In its profile, Princeton Review writes “Valparaiso's brand-new Christopher Center library complex stands as a shiny monument to the university's dedication to academics. Once freshmen get through the Valpo core curriculum, they choose from a host of strong major programs.”
- Valparaiso was one of 62 law schools in the United States selected to PreLaw Magazine's list of schools offering the best value for law students. The magazine selected the top programs based on measures of affordability (tuition under $30,000 for private law schools or $25,000 for public law schools), a bar passage rate higher than the state's average and an employment rate of 85 percent or greater.
Valparaiso University's options to students interested in military service have expanded with the approval of an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program. The Army ROTC program will complement Valparaiso's Air Force ROTC unit, which launched in 2000. Both are crosstown programs affiliated with Army and Air Force ROTC detachments based at the University of Notre Dame. Army and Air Force ROTC students receive academic credit from Valparaiso and travel to South Bend once a week for a four-year sequence of courses covering topics on leadership, the organizational structure of the Army, military protocols, American military history and current world issues affecting the Army. The Army ROTC provides full-tuition scholarships to students accepted into the program. Upon completion of the program, students are commissioned as second lieutenants and serve four years in the Army. Students interested in the Army ROTC at Valparaiso should contact Dr. Kraft at Alan.Kraft@valpo.edu or (219) 464-5171.
