VAN Visitors this past month include JD Struckmann of Texas who brought his young sons to visit Valpo before taking in a Cubs game in beautiful Wrigley Field (on a rainy day, no less - now that's a true Cubs fan!); Lauren Caywood Miller (Michigan) who drove the 4+ hours to and from Valpo in the same day to help her VU freshman brother move into his residence hall room (now that's a proud alumna big sister!); and Rebecca Balko Duesenber who flew in to visit from London with her beautiful and very active pre-schooler Anna (now that's a true blue Valpo friend!).

Area Receptions: At select times throughout the year we like to take Valparaiso University to prospective students, and VAN assistance with this type of reception is appreciated! We have had VAN members offer receptions ath their golf clubs, serve as keynote speakers at a local park recption hall, and host dessert events at their homes. Following are the receptions that VAN and the Admission Office have hosted or will be hosting this fall semester:

  • Sat., Aug. 4
  • 12:30-2:30pm Conner Prarie Chinese House in Fishers, Indiana

Assisted by VAN members Jamie Jo Banger, Chad Dorshorst and VAN student assistant Tim Dooms.

  • Sun., Aug. 12
  • 4-5:30pm Bent Creek Golf Club in Eden Prarie, Minnesota

Hosted by VAN member Russ Felten, & assisted by VAN members Laura Erickson, Kari Layman, Andrea & Dennis Neumann, Luke & Lisa Olson, Heidi Sturmfels, & current students Jacob Neumann & Tim Olson.

  • Thurs., Sept. 20
  • 3:30-5:15pm The Pines Restaurant in Hartland, Wisconsin

Hosted by alumnus Norm Eckstaedt, and currently seeking VAN members and current students to assist.

Potential receptions coming up this fall/early winter include Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit.

Re-enrollment forms have been mailed to all VAN members EXCEPT those who had recently joined the Network. If you have questions about the form, feel welcome to email or call us (toll free 888-468-2576). Remember that we appreciate and respect the assistance you provide Valpo’s Admission Office, no matter the level of time you can donate. Covering a college fair and connecting with an admitted student’s parents is as significant as reading this newsletter to tune in to Valpo life so you’re informed when chatting with a neighbor or coworker. The goal of the VAN is to spread the word about Valpo, and all 650 of our members do this in varying ways and levels; do what works for you!

College fair invitations have been coming in hard and fast this year. Yet it seems like we have fewer persons interested in assisting with these events – 113 fairs covered so far vs. 150 covered last fall. If I send out an appeal for college fair help it’s usually because we do not have a staff member who can attend the fair. So if you CAN help us spread the Valpo word through this activity, we’d appreciate the help. And if you can’t, I understand – just let me know either way, please. Thanks!
