Ron Rittgers Inaugural Lecture
German Reformation Studies
This past year, Valparaiso University welcomed a distinguished scholar of the Reformation, Ronald K. Rittgers, as the first professor to hold VU’s Erich Markel Chair in German Reformation studies.

Since joining Valpo’s faculty on July 1, he has been conducting research for a new book titled “The Reformation of Suffering: A Study of Pastoral Theology and Lay Piety in Early Modern Germany and Switzerland.” His recent book, “The Reformation of the Keys: Confession, Conscience and Authority in Sixteenth-Century Germany,” was nominated for the American Society of Church History’s prestigious Philip Schaff Prize in 2005.
Rittgers presented his inaugural lecture at Valpo last fall. Titled “Holy History, Dark History: The Past and Future of German Reformation Studies,” the lecture was part of the fall 2006 symposium series of Christ College.
