First Lady Diane Harre: A Vital Role at Valpo
Through nearly 20 years at Valparaiso University, President Alan Harre has seen many changes take place.
But one thing has remained a constant in his life—the love and support of wife Diane.

Valparaiso University’s first lady for almost two decades, Diane Harre brings a fresh perspective on what it means to serve VU.
As the “public face” of the university, her role has been vital. She’s attended thousands of functions both on and off campus—a demanding schedule, yet she has pursued it with tireless commitment and enthusiasm.
“When I first arrived at Valpo, I didn’t know a soul,” she says. “And I really didn’t know what was expected of a first lady. But I’ve always believed in just being myself.”
Over the years, she’s defined her role by working in various offices on campus; traveling on behalf of the university in the United States and abroad; worshiping in the chapel; attending student events; meeting with the university’s board of directors; and participating in alumni activities.
“We look forward to attending homecoming and the president’s circle dinners each year,” she says. “They’re like family reunions. When people are not there, they’re missed.”
Interacting with people is, in fact, one of the things Diane Harre finds most rewarding about her role, and she converses easily with individuals from all walks of life and relationship to Valpo.
While her husband has received numerous accolades for his leadership, she believes one of his most important achievements is the colleagues he’s pulled together to advance the university.
“It’s a strong administrative core, from the provost to the deans to the vice presidents. They are just incredible people who truly work as a team.”
With the firm foundation in place, what would she like to see accomplished in the next several years?
“The continued growth of the endowment, an exciting celebration of the university’s 150th anniversary, and a smooth transition for the new president and family,” she says. “I hope the university community will embrace the new administration in the same way that it made us feel very welcome.”
