My Valpo Story

By Bill Cross ’50 Jacksonville, Ill.

VU was a great inspiration after World War II. It helped me have greater confidence in myself. Dr. O.P. Kretzmann was an inspiring person, both to me and to a number of my classmates. Dr. Kretzmann encouraged students to develop and promote their suggestions to him. The end result was the social work major, the on-site engineering degree program, and the nearby city park. The teachers, Ernest Koenker [instructor in religion],Martin Schaefer [instructor in history], and Dan Gahl [instructor in history and government], among others, spent significant moments trying to help me see future alternatives more clearly. I can’t begin to number my fellow students, who were very helpful to me.
