Berner Receives Service Award
Bruce Berner ’65, ’67 J.D., Louis and Anna Seegers chair in law, is the recipient of the 2006 Legacy of Service Award, presented by the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce.
Brandhorst and Becker Direct Study Centers
Allan Brandhorst, professor of education, and Matthew Becker, associate professor of theology, have been named directors of the Study Centers in Cambridge and Reutlingen respectively. Each began a two-year appointment on July 1.
Goodman Retires
Naomi Goodman, technical services librarian in the School of Law, has been granted emeritus status by the university’s board of directors. Goodman retired after 20 years of service to Valpo. Active in both the American Association of Law Libraries and the Chicago Association of Law Libraries, Goodman also has served a term as president of CALL, as well as editor of the CALL Bulletin, the official publication of the Chicago Association of Law Libraries.
Ozgur Leads Midwest Decision Sciences Institute
Ceyhun Ozgur, professor of information and decision sciences in the College of Business Administration, has been elected to lead the Midwest Decision Sciences Institute, a professional organization of business scholars.
Palumbo Editor of ASME Journal
Robert Palumbo ’80, Valpo’s Jenny professor of emerging technology, has been appointed associate editor of the Journal of Solar Energy Engineering. He will oversee selection of research papers in the area of solar energy fundamentals and theory for publication in the journal, which is published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Two New Editions by Piehl
Mel Piehl ’68, dean of Christ College, co-wrote the seventh edition of “The Brief American Pageant: A History of the Republic.” Also, the new edition of “Breaking Bread: The Catholic Worker and the Origin of Catholic Radicalism in America,” has been published with a new afterword by Piehl.
Prough Researching in Japan
Jennifer Prough '91
Jennifer Prough, assistant professor of anthropology and humanities in Christ College, received grants from the National Council on East Asia and the VU Alumni Association to conduct research in Japan this summer. Prough will gather data on ways that global interest in Japanese comics (manga) is affecting the manga industry.
Tomasik Co-Edits Book
Timothy Tomasik, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures, is co-editor of the book, “At the Table: Metaphorical and Material Cultures of Food in Medieval and Early Modern Europe.”
Wangerin Writes Film Script
Walter Wangerin Jr. ’86 L.H.D, Emil and Elfriede Jochum university chair, is the author of a new film script under contract with Wind Dancer Productions. The screenplay is about a white pastor who serves a black congregation.
