Peters Alumnae Exemplify Service to Others
Judith (Griessel ’61) Peters, professor emerita of foreign languages and literatures at Valparaiso University, has devoted her professional and personal life to using the Spanish language to help others.

In recognition of this, the university earlier this year created the Judith Peters Aprender Ayudando (to learn by helping) Spanish Service Award. The yearly award recognizes students who have used their study of Spanish in the service of humanity. The first recipient is Katherine “Kat” Peters ’06 (no relation to Judith), of South Dakota, who majored in Spanish and international service.
“Kat has the mind and heart and spirit of service,” Judith says. “It is part of who she is. To have my name paired with hers through this award gives me great joy.”
Judith Peters earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and French from Valpo in 1961 and then returned to the university to teach Spanish until her retirement a few years ago.
“I have been fortunate to have Spanish language, literature and culture as my vocation, and this field is a natural for connecting with cross-cultural ways to be of service,” she says. “But my belief is that no matter what area of study a person pursues, the resulting knowledge and ability are used at their best in service to humanity.
“This award, which emphasizes service, indicates that Valparaiso University prepares its students for a life of discipleship, not simply for a life of earning a living.”
