FITT Athletic Project Moves Forward
Dedication of Valparaiso University’s new tennis complex—part of the first phase of the $3.2 million FITT project—will take place at Homecoming this fall.
The dedication is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at the complex, situated just north of Huegli Hall on campus. The event is free and open to all alumni and friends. Reservations are not required.
Valpo students are enjoying the benefits of 12 new tennis courts thanks to funds raised for the FITT athletic project.
The tennis complex dedication marks the completion of Phase I of FITT (football, intramurals, tennis and track), a facilities initiative that will benefit all Valpo students and student-athletes.
The 12 new tennis courts were in operation last spring when the Crusaders’ women’s tennis team defeated IUPUI 4-1 to win the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Championship and go on to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The tennis courts were constructed at their new location so that VU could expand the amount of land covered by the football field, which will be surrounded by a new eight-lane polyurethane track that all students can use for year-round training and conditioning.
Plans also call for the natural grass on the football field to be replaced with a synthetic, all-weather turf made of recyclable products. The turf is designed to decrease the number of injuries and recover faster from inclement weather.
It is the same product used by PAC 10, Big 10 and other larger football conference schools.
