Medical resident Andrew Makowski says the single most important factor that shaped his character while at Valpo was his four years of work with the Honor Council. For Andy, dealing with difficult ethical scenarios was invigorating. He became interested in academic integrity policies and “wound up publishing a study on the role of students in adjudicating matters of academic dishonesty.”

When this Physics/Astronomy major entered Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine, the dean asked him to sit on a professionalism committee. Andy was able to connect Loyola’s strong focus on bioethical thought to his work on Honor Council and academic integrity policies. He found the emergency medical field “ripe with ethical dilemmas” and decided to pursue a master’s degree in bioethics at Loyola and become better equipped “to tackle questions in practice as well as in writing.”
While at Loyola, Andy was chosen one of six, fourth-year students internationally to do an aerospace medicine clerkship with NASA. His research investigated the effect on astronauts of a medicine that blocks motion sickness. The opportunity to combine physics and astronomy with medicine was “really a dream come true” for Andy. Upon completion of his residency in Milwaukee, he plans to continue to consult with NASA and conduct research in aerospace medicine, practice emergency medicine, complete his master’s degree, and remain active in the field of bioethics.
