The Theatre Department facilities are located in the Center for the Arts, which was dedicated in September 1995. The spaces of the VUCA were designed as teaching spaces. In every case, the interests of students learning to do and make theatre were given highest priority. Every support space, including scene shop, costume shop, control booth, and dressing rooms, serve as studios for teaching of theatrical techniques. The Theatre Department is committed to teaching students using the most advanced technology. In addition, theatre faculty offices are located in the building insuring close working relationships between faculty and students.

Technical Booth

The Department of Theatre is committed to teaching students using the latest technology. The University Theatre is equipped with a large technical gallery for the operation of lighting and soundboards and a stage manager's booth for calling cues. Sound and lighting control are fully computerized. Equipment is new and state of the art.

Scene Shop

With direct communication to the University Theatre stage floor, the scene shop provides facilities for building 8-10 departmental productions per year. Stagecraft students learn to work with wood, steel, and plastic among other materials. Employing up to ten students per semester, the scene shop, with its great window, is a pleasant as well as an efficient place to work.

Dressing/Makeup Rooms

Dressing/makeup rooms: Designed to accommodate as many as 20 performers each, the dressing rooms are fully equipped shower and restrooms, as well. The rooms are large enough that the Theatre Department's makeup classes can be comfortably taught in them.

Rehearsal Room

A dance studio and theatre rehearsal room in the Arts Center provides a space for conducting dance and theatre rehearsals in close proximity to the University and Studio theatres.

Backstage

For the University Theatre include spacious areas for teaching theatre technology. The "backstage" is designed to accommodate informal interaction among students and their theatre professors as well as the serious business of running a theatre production.

University Theatre

A 280-seat facility for plays, musicals and small operas. Under the stage apron is a 25-seat orchestra pit; equipped with a full-trapped mainstage and double-decked side stages for environmental staging. The venue for the Theatre Department's major productions.

Studio Theatre

A 40'x 40' "black box" with its own lighting and sound systems. A technical operations center opens out into a technical gallery that may also be used for staging. Flexible seating for up to 65 people. The Theatre Department produces one faculty-directed projects and several student directed projects in this venue each year.
