Sociology at Valparaiso University is a dynamic
major that allows students to explore the social
world in which they live. Sociology students at
Valparaiso University receive a broad education
that combines the best of the liberal arts tradition
with the practicalities of job related skills.
Our students take courses in both social theory
and research design. They learn to analyze social
problems using critical thinking skills and they
can learn to conduct program evaluations using
the latest computer software.
The sociology major is comprehensive enough to
expose students to a variety of topics such as:
- Theory
- Race & ethnicity
- Research
- Deviance
|
- Social psychology
- Drugs and society
- Gender
- Aging
|
and streamlined enough to allow them to also
obtain a second major. Many of our students have
increased their learning and hiring potential
by double majoring while studying here.
All sociology students are encouraged to participate
in the broad array of special learning
programs that are available. These include:
- Internship programs at local, state and national
levels,
- Study abroad programs based in Germany, England,
Africa, China, Mexico and Spain
- Urban study semesters that take place in Chicago,
Washington D.C. or Indianapolis, IN.
Many of the courses available at these sites
can be used to partially fulfill the requirements
to graduate with a sociology major at VU.
