Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (general instructions)
The sample is introduced into an air-acetylene flame, which de-solvates any dissolved metals and produces an atomic gas. Radiation from a source made of the same metal passes through the flame and any metal atoms that is struck by this radiation will absorb some of the light and is proportional to the total number of metal atoms found in the flame.

Infrared Spectrometer (general instructions)
A sample is placed in a beam of infrared radiation. Components within the sample will absorb certain frequencies of the IR light; the patterns and their intensities help identify which elements bond to each other and how they are bonded.

Ultraviolet-visible Spectrometer (general instructions)
Organic and inorganic materials are placed in a UV-vis beam, where components absorb at different frequencies. The resulting graph shows which part of the electromagnetic spectrum the samples will absorb.
