Gas Chromatograph (general instructions)
A sample gets vaporized when it is injected into a column maintained at a high temperature. The mobile gaseous phase of the sample is carried through the column with helium. The vaporous compounds of the sample distribute themselves between the mobile phase and the stationary phases of the liquid film inside the column and separate.

Gel Electrophoresis (general instructions)
A protein or DNA sample is placed at one end of a porous gel an placed in a solution with an electric field, causing the sample to migrate. Smaller pieces will move faster along the lanes, which can be developed to show the band patterns.

High Performance Liquid Chromatograph
(general instructions)
The volatility/stability of the sample compound does not limit its use. The sample travels in a buffer that interacts with an opposing stream in a column, causing the components to separate.

Paper and Thin Layer Chromatography
The principle of separation in paper and thin layer chromatography is partitioning. Particles are separated based on the interactions between two non-miscible liquid phases.

Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer
(general instructions)
Organic materials in mixtures are volatilized and passed through a column. Repeated interactions with the column cause the larger components to move slowly, separating them from the smaller components. The mass spectrometer identifies the composition of the components as they emerge from the column.
