Dr. Pepa teaches in the undergraduate level and graduate programs.

Her considerable experience in intensive care, cardiovascular, and emergency room nursing provided a strong foundation for her clinical speciality in community/public health nursing, particularly home health. She still maintains a limited practice in home care.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Pepa is an active member of college and university committees as well as professional and community organizations. She is a past president of Zeta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing and is a Program Coordinator for Region 9 of the Society. Dr. Pepa is also a committee member for the Midwest Nursing Research Society and is on the planning committee for the Northwest Indiana Research Consortium. She has worked with community agencies concerned with domestic violence and literacy and has been an invited speaker on the topic of family violence. Dr. Pepa participates in a hospital-based nursing research committee and is an on-site evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

As a researcher, Dr. Pepa’s focus is on determinants, such as health literacy, complementary medicine, and perceptions of illness, that affect clients’ abilities to remain in the home. She is completing a collaborative study to evaluate the impact of easy to read medication information, which was funded by the Wheat Ridge Foundation. She combines her research interests with her clinical interests. Students have participated as data collectors and have created materials for clinical agencies. Combining teaching with research, Dr. Pepa has investigated the phenomenon of critical thinking with faculty colleagues. Dr. Pepa has published in Journal of Nursing Education, Nurse Educator, and Holistic Nursing Practice. She has also authored chapters on Alternative Health Modalities and Global Models of Health Care in Gerontological Nursing: Competencies for Care and has presented at regional, national, and international conferences.
