Dean and Professor, College of Nursing

Dr. Brown joined the faculty in 1977. She has taught several undergraduate courses and coordinated the RN-BSN Completion Program for a number of years in addition to teaching in the graduate program.

Professor Brown has had experience as a staff nurse at the Visiting Nurses Association of Porter County and as a medical-surgical unit director at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus. Her experience also includes clinical work at various long term care facilities and rehabilitation centers. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of Whispering Pines Health Care Center in which she had a long history of service. Dr. Brown is also a past member of the Board of Directors of Hilltop Neighborhood House and the Hilltop Community Health Center. She currently serves on the Visiting Nurses Association of Porter County Board of Directors, where she also serves as a member of the Professional Advisory Committee. Professor Brown received the 1998-99 Caterpillar Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition, she was recognized in May, 2006 as a finalist for The Nursing Spectrum Excellence Award in Teaching. Currently, she is a member of the Porter Hospital Board of Trustees.

In addition to teaching, Professor Brown is involved in research. Her research interests include the phenomena of health behavior change, particularly in older adults, and critical thinking. Dr. Brown uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods and has articles published in Western Journal of Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Education, Nurse Educator, Holistic Nursing Practice, and Journal of Professional Nursing. She is the co-editor of Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research published by Jones & Bartlett.

Professor Brown is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Midwest Nursing Research Society, and IONE. She serves as an on-site evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
