You've heard about flight simulation and how it's used to train pilots and astronauts, right? Well, another kind of simulation is used to educate nurses, and Valpo's College of Nursing has installed the latest in health care simulation.

Called the Virtual Nursing Learning Center, the laboratory offers eight state-of-the-art patient stations complete with interactive mannequins, beds and equipment simulating a hospital environment. Using mannequins that are very realistic, examinations and procedures can be practiced.

The Virtual Lab allows Valpo students to have real-time experience.

Through this simulation-based learning, you're introduced to psychomotor skills, become familiar with instruments and equipment, gain experience in recognizing problems, develop decision-making skills, and refine patient care techniques.

The virtual laboratory includes a nursing station with patient case studies, task trainers, and neo-natal and intensive care unit modules. Training stations include childbirth, infant and child simulators. At Valpo, you'll work with SIMMAN, the patient simulator that can be programmed to perform any physical human function. You'll practice procedures from catheterization to cardiac monitoring on SIMMAN.

Under the caring guidance of Valpo's nursing professors, you'll have the opportunity to learn nursing procedures with the most sophisticated and up to date equipment available. You'll learn to develop excellent critical thinking abilities by working in this realistic but non-threatening laboratory and be fully prepared and confident to participate in actual patient care experiences
