Assistant Professor of Applied Statistics

Department of Mathematics & Computer Science

Valparaiso University

The Department of Mathematics & Computer Science is seeking applications for two tenure track positions at the assistant professor level, beginning August, 2007, pending budget approval. 

Preferred applicants will have a PhD in applied statistics.  However, candidates with interest and experience in actuarial science or operations research will also be considered favorably.  Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

Teaching experience is valued. 

Duties include: teach 5 courses (21 hours) for the academic year; continued scholarly activity; and service to the department and the University. Candidates should be willing to work in a scholarly community committed to Christian higher education in the Lutheran tradition.

Student Opportunities

  • Teaching Assistants--the department hires TA's to support instruction in Math 114, 122, 124, 234, and 253 during the fall semester.  Up to fourteen students are hired.  Mathematics, Engineering, and Business students are particularly encouraged to apply.  Responsibilities include; a) meet weekly with the instructor, b) hold two group help sessions per week, c) complete assignment grading as needed by the instructor, d) be available one hour a week for individual tutoring.  A minimum of six hours of work per week is guaranteed.
  • Graders--in addition to the TA's, some faculty hire students to do additional grading. 

                                                                                                                      

  • Private Tutors--quite often throughout the school year parents of children in the local elementary, middle, and high schools, call the department seeking math tutors. 
  • Clerical Assistance--the department offers one clerical position to help with photocopying, computer entry, etc.  This is a 4 to 6 hour per week position.
