African legal scholars to present talks
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Two legal and social activists from Africa will discuss peace, governance and the rights of disadvantaged communities during lectures Oct. 23 and 29 at the Valparaiso University School of Law.
The law school’s lecture series “Scholars and Advocates in Residence: Shaping the Public Dialogue” will feature prominent Liberian political and social activist Negbalee Warner on Oct. 23 and South African attorney and socio-economics rights advocate Steve Kahanovitz on Oct. 29.
Both lectures begin at 4 p.m. in Wesemann Hall (656 S. Greenwich St.) and are free and open to the public.
Warner will discuss “Overcoming Historical and Continuing Challenges to Genuine Peace and Good Governance in Liberia.” He practices law at Pierre Tweh & Associates in Monrovia and recently completed an assignment as head of secretariat for the World Bank’s Liberia Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative. Warner is active in the international Governance and Economic Management Assistance program and the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia.
Kahanovitz will present “An Urban Slice of the Pie: The Constitution and the Prevention of Illegal Eviction and Unlawful Occupation of Law Act.” Kahanovitz, a staff attorney with the Legal Resources Center in Cape Town, has been a leading advocate in litigating socio-economic rights cases on behalf of poor and marginalized communities in South Africa. He has written numerous scholarly articles on labor and human rights topics and was a contributor to key legislative issues during the first decade of South Africa’s democracy.
The presentations have been approved by the Indiana Commission on Continuing Legal Education for one hour of CLE credit. A Certificate of Attendance form will be provided and attorneys seeking CLE credits are responsible for self-reporting to their own state’s MCLE Board or Commission.
The lecture series will conclude Nov. 11 with the lecture “Sexual Offender Law Reform: The Australian Experience,” presented by Justice Marcia Ann Neave of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Court of Appeals division.
