Prof. Alan White to testify before House Financial Services Committee

Valparaiso University School of Law Professor Alan White will testify before Congress this Wednesday, September 17, 2008. Professor White, a nationally recognized expert on predatory lending, foreclosure litigation and bankruptcy, will go before the House Financial Services Committee.

Professor White, who advocates strict regulation of sub-prime lending, will appear in a session on implementation of the HOPE for Homeowners Act of 2008 and the reviewing of foreclosure mitigation efforts. He will answer questions from Committee members, including Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA).

This session of the House Financial Services Committee is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT (9 a.m. CDT). In March, Professor White created and moderated “Defending Foreclosures, Saving Homes,” a daylong conference presented by Valparaiso Law and Indiana Legal Services. The conference, held on the campus of Valparaiso University School of Law, drew participants and attendees from throughout the Midwest.

Valparaiso University School of Law, founded in 1879, is located on the campus of Valparaiso University in Northwest Indiana, 55 miles from downtown Chicago.

About Prof. Alan White

White joined Valparaiso's law faculty last year after serving as supervising attorney for Community Legal Services Inc., which provides legal services to low-income consumers in Philadelphia. From 2000 to 2003 he served as a fellow and consultant at the National Consumer Law Center, where he wrote manuals on truth in lending, student loans and consumer bankruptcy, and presented testimony to the Federal Reserve Board on predatory mortgage lending and research on mortgage foreclosures. In 2004, he was named National Association of Consumer Advocates' Consumer Attorney of the Year. White helped produce the DVD "Defending Foreclosures, Saving Homes," featuring speakers at a March conference he organized, who presented the latest developments in foreclosure and bankruptcy, loss mitigation and mortgage servicer practices.
