Prof. Rebecca Huss to appear on Animal Planet

Valparaiso University law professor Rebecca Huss is scheduled to appear Sunday, Aug. 24, on the Animal Planet program “Animal Witness: The Michael Vick Case.”
The program, which is scheduled to premiere at 9 p.m. (CST), will focus on the dogfighting investigation of Vick.
Huss served as the court-appointed guardian/special master of the American pit bull terriers formerly owned by Michael Vick in the Bad Newz Kennels case and made recommendations to the court regarding what became of the dogs.
The program also is scheduled to be rebroadcast several times, including midnight Aug. 25, 8 and 10 p.m. Aug. 27 and 5 p.m. Aug. 31. More information about the program and a complete schedule of broadcasts is online at animal.discovery.com/tv/animal-witness/michael-vick.
Huss, a nationally-recognized expert in animal law, was honored for her work in the case with with a 2008 Law Enforcement Public Service Award from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and an Award of Excellence from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General.
Huss was given responsibility for observing the dogs, reviewing evaluation reports from animal care professionals and interacting with evaluation teams to make recommendations for their future. Her recommendation to place 47 pit bulls with eight rescue organizations was approved in December by the judge overseeing the case.
She recently served as keynote speaker at an annual animal law conference in Minnesota and discussed the process of finding responsible care for the dogs seized in the Vick case in her presentation “What Became of the Dogs? The Custody and Placement of the Dogs Involved in the Bad Newz Kennel Case.”
