Valparaiso University to celebrate 150 years of history
Tuesday, May 20, 2008
A celebration of Valparaiso University’s past, present and future will take place throughout the 2008-2009 academic year, as the 150th anniversary of the institution’s founding is recognized.
In addition to reflecting upon the institution’s distinguished history, the sesquicentennial anniversary will celebrate Valparaiso’s vibrant future with numerous events that include the inauguration of its 18th president and dedication of the largest construction project in the history of the University.
“Valparaiso is a place where generations of students have prepared to serve and lead in church and society,” said President Dr. Alan Harre, who is retiring June 30. “This anniversary is an opportunity for us to remember and honor that vision and all of the people who have been a part of this University during the past 150 years. At the same time, everyone in the Valparaiso family will be able to look forward together and see the promise of fulfilling that vision for future generations.”
Valparaiso was founded in 1859 as Valparaiso Male and Female College, one of the first coeducational institutions of higher learning in the United States. Rechartered as Valparaiso University in 1906, the institution’s modern history began in 1925, when it was purchased by the Lutheran University Association and became an independent Lutheran university.
Among the events taking place as part of Valparaiso’s 150th anniversary celebration are:
- Aug. 31 – Campus Kickoff Celebration for students, faculty and staff;
- September through April – The VU Alumni Association will host 15 regional alumni events across the country;
- Oct. 11 – As part of Homecoming Weekend, a special Saturday evening concert will be held at the Chapel of the Resurrection;
