   SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

$1,000 Scholarship for First Year Students Who Will Major in Classics, French, German or Spanish
Deadline for Fall 2009:  January 30, 2009 postmark

• Access on-line exam for First Year Student Scholarship Application (only German and Spanish applicants take the exam on-line).

Valparaiso University announces its annual competition for $1,000 scholarships for first year students who will major in Classics, French, German, or Spanish. These merit awards are renewable three times for a total of $4,000 if the student remains a foreign language major and makes satisfactory academic progress. Scholarship holders may have two majors.

There are three parts of the application process:

1) SUBMIT THE APPLICATION, including an essay of 200 words about your academic and career goals. You may submit the application in one of two ways:

• Complete the on-line application form (with essay)

or

• Print off the application form (pdf) and mail it along with your essay to Dr. Nelly Zamora-Breckenridge (see address below)

2) OBTAIN A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION from your high school language teacher who will then mail the letter to:

3) COMPLETE A LANGUAGE EXAM

• If you are in German or Spanish, you will take the on-line language exam (step 4 in the on-line application). Even if you submit your application form by regular mail, you must take the language exam for German or Spanish on-line by clicking on the link above.

• If you are in Classics (Latin) or French, we will send the language exam to your teacher or you may take it at Valpo during a visit to campus before January 31, 2009.

   SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UPPER-CLASS STUDENTS

CLASSICS:
• The Reverend and Mrs. Arthur L. Reinke and The Reverend and Mrs. Augustus Reinke Memorial Scholarship
• The John and Dorothea Helms Endowed Scholarship
•  Eta Sigma Phi Scholarships


Classics scholarships are available to students who have completed at least one year of Classics studies at VU. These scholarships recognize excellence in academics and serve as an incentive for students to continue their studies in Classical culture and language.  More information about eligibility is available on the Classics website.

FRENCH:

• The Professor Carol Petersen Scholarship is awarded to an incoming student majoring in French or German.
• The Patterson McLean Friedrich French Scholarship
is awarded to a Junior student majoring in French.


GERMAN:
• The Professor Carol Petersen Scholarship
is awarded to an incoming student majoring in French or German.
• The Reutlingen Semester Scholarship
• The Tübingen Orientation Scholarship

These scholarships are supported by the Made Kade Foundation and are available to sophomores, juniors and seniors who are studying in Germany through the VU study abroad program. 
The Henry and June Giebel Scholarships provides financial assitance for students who spend a full year studying in Germany. Preference is given to future German teachers and VIEP-German students.

   DEPARTMENT AWARDS

Each year in May, the Foreign Language faculty hold an "end-of -the-year" Honors Reception during which they give special recognition to their graduating majors and present awards to those students who have done superior work in their field.

The senior French major who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and promise in French studies is presented with the Roger and Hazel Guillaumant Award. The French section also awards book prizes to students who have demonstrated superior work in their language studies.

The senior German major who has demonstrated excellence in German studies is awarded the Walther M. Miller Memorial Prize; the outstanding junior student in German studies is awarded the Thora Moulton Prize.

Exceptional students of Spanish and of Chinese and Japanese are also recognized with book prizes at this time.

The Classics section publicly recognizes those students who have been awarded scholarships in Latin and Greek.

   HONOR SOCIETIES

VU maintains active chapters of several foreign language honor societies. Outstanding students may apply for membership into the following societies:

Classics -- Eta Sigma Phi
French -- Pi Delta Phi
German -- Delta Phi Alpha
Spanish -- Sigma Delta Pi
