English and Your Future
Career and Professional Opportunities
Many careers are open to the student who graduates with a major in English. You may be surprised to learn that medical and law schools appreciate a strong background in English. Top business executives frequently complain that their subordinates are poor at oral and written expression. If you plan a career in business, you may well prefer a background in business administration, but you should also be able to analyze, assimilate, and communicate a large variety of information. For this, English offers excellent preparation. (The interested student might consider the English major and the Liberal Arts Business Minor: see current University Bulletin.) In short, job possibilities for the English major are almost unlimited.
Ask the Huegli Hall Support Staff Office for a copy of "English: The Pre-Professional Major," a booklet that contains more information on career possibilities for the English major. You should also consult the University's Career Center for help with specific job hunting strategies.
