Faculty: Edward Uehling, chair

 

Professor Uehling's teaching specialties include medieval literature, American literature, and literature of the Vietnam war. .

Professor Uehling has taught at Valparaiso University since 1977. At VU, he particularly appreciates the intellectual energy of great students and great colleagues.

According to Prof. Uehling, beneficial teaching means a careful equation between his own enthusiasm for texts and that of the community that studies and discusses them, often for the first time.

Professor Uehling brings to the English department a wide range of academic interests and expertise. He enjoys teaching fiction from the nineteenth century forward, especially concerning the Vietnam War and American women writers. He also enjoys teaching advanced composition, medieval literature, and history of the English language. Among his favorite literary works are the Canterbury Tales, which he says "wear well."

Professor Uehling has chaired the English department on and off for at total of fourteen years. He is also chairing the task force for the new English, History, and Education building, and has served as a mentor for the Lilly Fellows Program and the United Board Scholars. He is currently mentoring a scholar from Cambodia.

Recent publications by Professsor Uehling have appeared in Vietnam War Generation Journal, The Cresset, and Twentieth Century Literature.

In his spare time, Professor Uehling enjoys golf, baseball, fishing, time with his family, and the care and maintenance of his old Studebaker.

Prof. Uehling received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
