Professor Sponberg specializes in theater.

Professor Sponberg joined the Valparaiso University English faculty in 1972.

At Valparaiso, he enjoys being able to work with students and colleagues from all academic areas.

Professor Sponberg’s teaching philosophy is simple and straightforward. He strives to be 1. prepared, 2. on time, 3. audible, 4. inquisitive, 5. helpful, 6. positive, and 7. available.

Professor Sponberg specializes in theatre. His publications included two books: Broadway Talks: What Professionals Think About Commercial Theatre in America (Greenwood Press, 1991) , and A.R. Gurney: A Casebook (Routledge, 2003).

In addition to teaching, Professor Sponberg’s campus involvements include serving as Chair of the American Studies Committee, Sigma Tau Delta, Dramawrights (the campus association of playwrights and screenwriters), Green Peas (the campus vegetarian society) and English advising. He also serves as Co-Chair of Books and Coffee, an annual series of public book reviews.

Professor Sponberg’s passions include football, for its graceful choreography; golf, for its brutal physicality; theatre, for its clarity and precision; the history of science, for its emotional and ambitious obsessions; politics, for its complicated rhythms and harmonies; music, for its democratic and inspirational vistas; religion, for its simple, heartbreaking mysteriousness. He also hosts a weekly radio show called "American Stories" on WVLP 98.3 FM, Valparaiso. It features the reading of classic works of American fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.

Professor Sponberg received his B.A. from Augustana College, M.A. from The University of Chicago, and Ph.D. from The University of Michigan.
