ENGLISH 231. FILM AESTHETICS.

This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the study of film, with a primary focus on the possibilities and limitations of aesthetic valuation of film, as well as on the formal elements of film; it also provides students with a introduction to the discipline of film studies and its concerns. Films will be studied intensively from the viewpoint of narrative technique, image, camera movement, sound, and historical significance, with a strong emphasis on the ability of film to communicate ideas and meaning often incommunicable in other artistic forms. This course may be used to fulfill the Fine Arts/Fine Arts-Literature component of the General Education Requirements.
