Civil Engineering Program Outcomes
MISSION of the CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Civil Engineering Department is to provide the highest
quality technical education, which is grounded in the arts and sciences,
by faculty dedicated to challenging teaching and extraordinary care for
individual students. The department will strive to develop graduates who
will be effective members of engineering teams, managers of engineering
projects, and serve as leaders in the civil engineering discipline and
within the broader community of church and society.
The Program Outcomes (PO) help to direct and measure the success of the
Civil Engineering in accomplishing its mission. Review of the EO and PO
is an integral part of the annual assessment process.
Program Outcomes (PO)
Civil engineering graduates from Valparaiso University will be able to:
1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills, design skills, and technical
competence including the use of math and science skills in at least four
(4) areas of civil engineering such as: environmental, geotechnical, structural,
transportation, and water resources engineering.
2. Function effectively as a member of a team including multidisciplinary
teams.
3. Effectively communicate.
4. Conduct experiments in a range of civil engineering subjects as well
as analyze and interpret data.
5. Function within the ethical framework of the civil engineering discipline.
6. Demonstrate understanding of non-technical factors such as safety,
politics, economics, and/or finance related to civil engineering projects.
7. Demonstrate understanding of the effect of business and management
fundamentals on the development, construction, and/or operation of civil
engineering facilities.
8. Demonstrate understanding of cultural and societal issues.
9. Demonstrate a commitment to their continued intellectual and professional
growth.
