Karl Reichardt

Associate Professor of Accounting

Dr. Reichardt's primary teaching interests in the areas of managerial accounting and cost management originated during his graduate studies at both the University of Denver and the University of Missouri. He has pursued this interest throughout his professional career in industry and teaching. He has been teaching Cost Accounting and Accounting Information Systems as well as three introductory accounting courses at VU since he arrived in 1988.

Degrees:

  • Ph.D. - University of Missouri, Columbia, 1971
  • M.S.B.A. Accounting - University of Denver, 1967
  • B.B.A. Accounting - University of Wisconsin, 1966

He possesses the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) professional designation- the only CBA faculty member at VU with this designation-as a consequence of completing the first CMA examination with distinguished performance (1972).

Dr. Reichardt's primary research has been the annual salary survey that he has conducted with his co-author Dr. David Schroeder (also of the CBA) on behalf of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). This study was first conducted in 1989 and has been completed every year since then-a period of 13 consecutive years. The results are published annually in Strategic Finance (and Management Accounting, the predecessor journal). Several other research efforts on ethics and job satisfaction of accountants have been generated from this salary survey data that have been published in journals and/or presented at national meetings.

Before joining VU in 1988, Dr. Reichardt held several positions with the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). As Director of Examinations of the ICMA, he was responsible for all aspects of the CMA examination including examination administration at the various testing sites across the US, developing the questions for the examination, developing the solutions and grading keys for the examination, and the administration of the grading process for the examination. Dr. Reichardt also taught for four years at the University of South Carolina before joining the ICMA and has served as an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Eastern Michigan University.

Professionally, Dr. Reichardt is active with the IMA having held several positions in local chapters, including President of the Indiana Dunes Chapter, as well as national service on the Committee on Academic Relations and Committee on Corporate and Academic Development. He currently is serving his second three-year term on the Board of Regents of the ICMA-the policy making board for the CMA and CFM (Certified in Financial Management) examinations.

Dr. Reichardt has served the university and the college on various committees and activities during his VU tenure. His past service includes being a member of and chair of various search committees; member and chair of the CBA Curriculum Committee; advisor to Mortar Board, Accounting Society, and Beta Gamma Sigma; and member of the Chapel Ministry staff. He has been the President's Marshall for convocations and graduations since 1994 and currently serves on VU's Budget Advisory Committee. He is an active member of Christ Lutheran Church where he participates as a lector and communion assistant as well as serving on ad hoc committees for church activities.
