Charles Kirkland

Visiting Lecturer in Accounting

Charles Kirkland brings 30 years of practical experience to Valparaiso University. He founded the CPA firm of Kirkland, Eckels & Co. in 1981 and led it in providing accounting, auditing and consulting services to small businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout the Midwest.

In 1999, he joined the VU faculty as an adjunct instructor, and has taught Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Auditing, Accounting Information Systems, and Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting. He has also taught at Purdue University's Calumet campus (Income Tax, Intermediate Accounting I and II), and seven years in the University of Illinois' Certificate in Business Administration, a post-graduate program in management for managers of not-for-profit organizations.

  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA)

From 1988-1991, he served as chair of the national Not-for-Profit Committee of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). He was the principal author of the AICPA's three volume Not-for-Profit Organizations Audit Manual, (1993), and the author of several continuing education seminars: Advanced Accounting and Auditing for Not-for-Profit Organizations, (1999), The AICPA Survival Guide to Audits of Not-for-Profit Organizations, (1997), and Using the New AICPA Audit and Accounting Guide, (1996). He has conducted those (and other) seminars for the AICPA in 28 states.

He currently serves on the Regional Arts Council (Region I) of the Indiana Arts Commission and is on the board of the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center. He has served on the boards of numerous nonprofits and was president of: the Hobart (IN) Industrial Economic Development Corp., the Muskegon (MI) Council for the Arts, and Clean Cities Recycling, Inc. Prior to becoming a CPA, Mr. Kirkland served in the US Army as an intelligence officer for six years, and was the Executive Director of two symphony orchestras.
