2007 Ornament
The Brandt Campanile
The Brandt Campanile has boldly pointed toward heaven from the heart of campus since its dedication on Sept. 27, 1959. The campanile, a gift from August H. and Ella Louise Brandt, stood silent for 21 years. On the evening of Sept. 26, 1980, Dr. Robert Schnabel announced, “Let the bells ring!” and nine bells rang out across campus. The carillon was given by the Valparaiso University Guild. This ornament celebrates the rhythm the campanile brings to Valparaiso University. More than just the simple counting of hours, the sound of its chimes reaches beyond campus beckoning students to class, faculty to teach, administrators to serve and Christians to worship.

The Valparaiso University Mascot
The Crusader has been Valparaiso University's mascot since January 21, 1942 when it was officially adopted by the faculty athletics committee and a committee specially appointed by O.P. Kretzmann. The Crusader has had three graphic identities. During the 1950s, both David Michel '51 and Mel Doering '53 represented the Crusader by riding on horseback during home athletic events and in the Homecoming parade. Prior to the adoption of the Crusader, Valparaiso University's mascot was the Uhlan.
