Huegli Lecture Unites Nursing Alumni, Faculty, Students

For 25 years, the Huegli Endowed Lecture has been bringing together Valparaiso University College of Nursing alumni, faculty and students to hear distinguished leaders in health care present the latest in practices, research and teaching.

This past fall, some 135 people were on hand to hear Marion E. Broome, dean and professor of the Indiana School of Nursing, speak at the 25th annual Huegli Endowed Lecture during homecoming weekend at Aberdeen Manor Ballroom and Event Center in Valparaiso.

Broome shared her research on children’s pain management, a topic she has studied much of her career. Her research has revolutionized children’s pain management, along the way helping ill children and their parents learn techniques to overcome pain.

The Huegli Lecture afforded Valpo College of Nursing faculty, students and alumni an opportunity to learn from and visit with Broome.

“It went very well,” Broome said. “It was particularly exciting to see all the students there.”

Broome focused on what she has learned from research with children and families, specifically how a child views research participation in a health care setting, and how they might want to be involved in decision-making. She also spoke about how, as health care professionals, nurses and nurse researchers need to listen to the voice of children.

“It was excellent,” VU College of Nursing Dean Janet Brown said. “She was an awesome speaker.”

Afterward, Broome took the opportunity to mingle with those in attendance.

“It was very positive,” Broome said. “People were warm and shared their experiences with children and families.”
