Philip Leege ’57 ME
In 1998, Philip Leege ’57 ME completed a 41-year career with The Procter & Gamble Company. In working at P&G, he became chair of the Standards and Practices Committee for the U. S. Composting Council. His laboratory manual, “Test Methods for the Examination of Composting and Compost,” is considered the international standard for the industry. As chair, Leege helped to define the word “compostable” and management of the municipal-scale composting process, which paved the way for development of numerous recyclable consumer and packaging products in the United States and other countries. He currently works with a firm in Canada to engineer fuel ethanol plants for construction in several Canadian provinces. This is an outgrowth of his work with the world’s largest composting plant in Edmonton, Alberta.

A Message From Dean Kraig Olejniczak ’87 EE
Since 1917, Valparaiso University’s College of Engineering has been preparing graduates to lead and serve for the greater good. As the college celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, it continues to be recognized as one of the nation’s best non-doctoral or undergraduate engineering programs. Based on a survey of engineering deans and faculty members throughout the country, the College of Engineering tied for 20th in the nation among 172 schools where the highest degree awarded is a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Knowing that a strong program needs an adequate facility to advance its goals, the university is in the midst of a fundraising campaign that includes significant enhancements to Gellersen Center. Your support will ensure that the college continues to produce graduates who make the greatest positive impact in their professions, churches and society.
Thank you to all who participated in the online survey; your ideas and suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to give me a call at 219.464.5085 or send an e-mail to kraig.olejniczak@valpo.edu.
